Jazz and dance

Jazz technique and dance combinations for the stage, for ages 8 to 17. The same three groups as musical theatre, so friends can take both.

At a glance

  • Ages 8 to 17, in three groups

  • Sixty to ninety minutes, once a week

  • Classes of up to 14

  • Studio A

What a class is like

  1. 01

    Step 1: Warm up

A short, steady warm-up that brings the room together on the first count.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Technique

Walks, turns and kicks, taught slowly at first and then in time with the music.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Across the floor

Lines of dancers travel the room, with the teacher calling the counts.

  4. 04

    Step 4: A combination

A new phrase each month that the class learns, polishes and shares.

  5. 05

    Step 5: Cool-down

A stretch together, and a word about what to practice at home.

Good to know

  • What to wear and bring

A fitted top with leggings or shorts, and clean sneakers or jazz shoes that stay in the studio. Hair up and off the neck. Socks are fine for the first weeks.

  • Length and size

Sixty minutes for Chorus and ninety for Ensemble and Cast, in a class of up to 14.

  • Moving up

Dancers move up when the teacher and the family agree it is time. There is no test.
